The first luxury SUV that Mercedes-Benz created was the ML class back in 1997. Although Mercedes already had the G class for some time, it wasn’t a luxury vehicle yet, it actually started out as an off road vehicle. The ML class was the first of a long line of SUV models to come out from Mercedes-Benz in the following years.
A big reason the ML class was so successful was that it combined all the off-road features that consumers loved about the original G class, but added luxury features to it like a smoother ride, and an eye catching comfortable interior.
Mercedes-Benz kept the original design up until 2005 when they introduced the second generation. Which offered bigger, stronger, and more evolved engines.
The third generation was introduced in 2011 with improved gas mileage, incredible ride comfort, and the safest model yet.
In 2015 Mercedes decided to change the name from ML class to GLE, and also received a coupe model.
The ML,GL,E,R,S class SUVs come with either a gas engine or the OM642 Sprinter diesel engine. Except for some minor changes in heads and cams, the Sprinter engines and Mercedes SUV engines are almost the exact same. Mercedes-Benz has been able to pass emission test and increasing performance by adding Diesel Particulate Filters(DPF), and Diesel Exhaust Fluid(DEF) to their diesel lineups. However, adding more parts means that more parts can fail, and mess up the engine.
The Mercedes SUV diesel engine can have lots of issues due to the fact that it was made for a Sprinter van that has more room for the engine to be housed in. For example one big issue that drivers are having is that the engine heats up so much, due to the enclosed area it’s in, that it begins to cook the oil. Since Mercedes-Benz is telling everyone to change their oil only once every 15,000 to 20,000 miles it forces the oil to sludge up and and destroy the engine.
If you notice a large decrease in power as you’re driving it is very likely your Mercedes is in “Limp Mode”. To clarify if the engine computer notices any abnormality in the drivetrain or engine it will disable the turbocharger, even if the issue doesn’t involve the turbocharger itself. In more severe cases the reverse function will even be disabled, and the vehicle will be limited to a lower gear. Basically the computer does this to help push you to fix the problem sooner rather than later, and also to avoid any further damage.
Oil leaks are a common problem in almost all Mercedes-Benz engines. The reason for it is hardened oil cooler gaskets. The good news is you can actually upgrade the seals, reducing the chance this happens. The bad news is the amount of time it takes to getting to the oil cooler. You have to removed the turbo, intake manifold, and more just to get to the oil cooler. If you’re handy then doing it yourself can save you a good chunk of money, if not be prepared for a hefty bill from the mechanic.
